As an enthusiastic supporter of the arts, we were excited to recently host multimedia artist Brian Trelegan for a week’s residency at our Maine headquarters. Trelegan has sought out collaborative relationships with local businesses in order to find spaces to produce his artwork. He focuses on taking pieces of broken and obsolete technology and giving them new lives in his art. His work also explores the concept of using office spaces as places where art can be made – a theme that brought him to WEX.
“There tends to be a bit of a stigma that offices stifle creativity, and I’m trying to think about that in a different way and find inspiration in the space,” says Trelegan. “I’m interested in using this work to make people focus on these mundane things that they might normally pass by at work and help them become aware of their surroundings again.”
During his time at WEX, Trelegan created some small sculptural pieces, including one constructed of plastic name tag holders strung from the ceiling and animated by a small computer fan. The central piece that tied it all together was an audio experience based on the sound of the fan in the office where he worked. Using a software program that extracts the varying pitches of the fan, Trelegan created a composition that subtly draws in the listener.
Trelegan received his BA in studio art from Williams College and is the 2017 recipient of the college’s Hubbard Hutchinson Fellowship.
