What makes Maine a great place to operate a business? WEX has long been a corporate citizen of this great state, and many of our own employees—including WEX President and CEO Melissa Smith—were born and raised Mainers.
Born in the small town of Wynn, Melissa got the chance to speak with Mainebiz Magazine, Maine’s Business News Source, about the benefits of running a Maine-based multinational, as well as her own journey to the top of WEX.
Some of the biggest benefits of doing business in Maine is the community, the relationships, and the natural beauty of this state, according to Smith.
On community and relationships:
“At WEX, our culture is grounded in building strong relationships and solid execution on behalf of our customers and partners. Our employees in Maine, […], live these commitments every day.”
“When people think of ‘employee benefits,’ they typically don’t think of easy access to incredible hiking, skiing, and boating. While not a formal employee benefit, we are very aware of just how lucky we are to live, work and play in such an amazing environment.”
“We are very proud to be headquartered in Maine, where the company started over 30 years ago. I feel that the Maine culture translates into the company and our longstanding emphasis on relationships.”
For the full interview, including WEX’s commitment to finding the best and the brightest employees, growing while maintaining a focus on relationships and community, and Smith’s own personal journey—learning the value of hard work and community at an early age, graduating from the University of Maine, and growing both personally and professionally as a WEX’er —check out the entire interview in the Mainebiz Fact Book, available online at www.mainebiz.biz/factbook2015.
