Work has already started on our new global headquarters, and we were excited to recently take part in a ceremonial groundbreaking at the waterfront site in downtown Portland, Maine. The building, which will be home at least 450 WEXers when it opens in 2019, is a significant accomplishment for both the company and the city of Portland.
In his opening remarks, Portland City Manager Jon Jennings called it “a really historic day for the city of Portland.” He went on to note that “To have a company of the magnitude of WEX have their world headquarters on our waterfront in Portland, Maine is a significant accomplishment.”
President and CEO Melissa Smith was on-hand to receive a symbolic key to the city, with City Councilor David Brenerman noting that the project is a game changer for the waterfront and for the city’s future growth. More than just an office building, our new headquarters helps enhance Portland’s reputation as a growing, vibrant and business-friendly city, Brenerman said.
For Smith, who was born and raised in the state and attended the University of Maine, the move to keep our headquarters local was a natural choice. She talked about the vibrancy and connection to the community that a company and its employees get being in town. Like other speakers, she also talked about the importance of creating quality jobs in Maine that can help spur more economic growth.
“We’re at this great mark of over $1 billion in revenue and on a really great growth path,” said Smith. “A lot of that I attribute to not just the products we have, but also to the culture of the company.” Smith went on to note that WEX culture and values around innovation, integrity and building communities and relationships are key to how we win business across the world – and they all had their beginnings in Maine.
“It’s a momentous time for all WEXers,” said Mike Dubyak, our executive chairman and former CEO. “Portland really is a destination city in the midst of a renaissance, and it’s great that we’re going to anchor ourselves here.”
